Testing poultry imports and packaging for COVID-19 serves no purpose
February 15, 2021
USAPEEC Veterinary Trade Policy Advisor Dr. John Clifford has sent a letter to select USDA staff in key Asian markets stating that testing poultry imports including product packaging for the presence of the COVID-19 virus serves no purpose.
Clifford wrote that, “Our industry understands that poultry is not involved in the transmission of COVID-19. But misinformation that has been disseminated on this subject as well as a general lack of scientific knowledge has caused confusion. And that potentially could damage our ability to export. Bringing clarity to this issue, through an explanation of the science involved in determining food product safety, is essential.”
