U.S.-Japan Trade Agreement now official

The official signing this week of the U.S.-Japan Trade Agreement stands to benefit the U.S. poultry and egg export industry through reduced tariffs and improved export opportunities.

Once the agreement takes effect, Japan will immediately eliminate tariffs for U.S. turkey, duck, and egg albumin products. Other U.S. poultry products will see an immediate reduction in tariff rates and further staged tariff reductions until they are eliminated within five to 12 years. The tariff reductions will occur in stages, with the first occurring when the deal takes effect. There would be subsequent reductions on April 1 of each year afterward.

As a result, U.S. poultry producers will have the same advantages as those of members of the Trans-Pacific Partnership when they sell to Japan.
