Fueled by pandemic, rise of e-commerce in Mexico offers opportunity

The COVID-19 pandemic has hit many industries hard the last few months, and U.S. poultry and egg exports have been no exception, especially to Mexico.
As companies have scrambled to adapt to the changing environment, one business segment has increased significantly – e-commerce. Shopping patterns were already changing in Mexico, but the pandemic has fueled this shift. And, it has provided USAPEEC members, local processors, restaurants, and bakeries in Mexico that use U.S. poultry and egg products another way to reach consumers and generate revenue to offset declines in areas such as foodservice.
Before the pandemic, Mexico’s online purchases had been increasing steadily over the last few years and were projected to reach $1.8 million in 2020 for online food delivery purchases, a 37.5 percent increase from 2019, according to Statista.
